Shoveling the driveway.

You know the rule that if you wash your car it will rain. Same goes for shoveling snow off the driveway.

Catching up

I've been thinking of a lot of things the kids do and say that I want to put up on the blog, or write down anywhere really. But now that the time has come, I've forgotten most things.
I do love that Liam says, "Fanks" (thanks) now. Its so sweet. He always remembers to tell me "fanks" and it catches me off guard sometimes. He also said a pretty decent prayer tonight at dinner.
Julia catches me off guard occasionally when she says, "Mommy!" and I say, "what?" usually a little concerned about what it might be that she is about to tell me because sometimes it sounds a little frantic, or just out of the blue. Then she softens and says, "I love you." Its wonderful.
Julia lately has been announcing her feelings rather frequently. She'll say, "You're making me angry!", or "You're making me sad!" Sometimes it breaks my heart when I tell her not to jump on the couch or something simple and she replies, "you're making me sad." I don't know how to react to that.
She still has a habit of just repeating my name over and over and over. Its a little annoying. I'll answer her, but she just keeps saying it. Today Mark was teasing her and kept saying her name. I chimed in and she was going back and forth between us as we kept saying, "Julia", "Julia", "Julia"... finally she said, "You're making me CRAZY!" and fell down laughing.
Julia wakes up most days and says, "It's Christmas! Wake up!" or, "Its my birthday!" I think she gets the present concept of the season.
We went to temple square last night to look at the lights. Neither of our kids seemed duly impressed. Liam was more interested in the water fountains and would say, "another one" when he'd see more. Julia was too cold and insisted on being carried. She kept her face buried against my neck most of the time. When we got back to the car she said, "I'm ready now for hot chocolate and movie."
Poor Liam likes the snow, but doesn't understand that its the cold of the snow that makes his hands hurt. He doesn't like his mittens or gloves and keeps taking them off. Then after 10 or 15 seconds begins to bawl because his hands hurt. So I somehow get his gloves back on, he calms down for a minute, then promptly takes the mittens off again and cries some more. Poor kid takes after his mom. Julia on the other hand has Wainwright blood. While Liam bawls with his hands in the air Julia shakes hers, says, "brr, my hands are cold" then runs back in to the snow.
Well, that turned out to be a lot for one post. A Merry Christmas post may be coming soon. Tune in next time...

A few funny things

Liam loves to clean up. He still likes to make messes, but he'll clean them up when he is done or if I ask him to. The other day he had a bag of cheerios and he dumped them all out for the fun of it. I told him he needed to clean them up, so I got his baggy and started picking up cheerios to help him get started. He put a few in the bag, then went to get a rag and started washing them up. he really scrubbed well too. It was fun to watch him rubbing a bunch of cheerios into the carpet.

While changing Liam's diaper I laid him down on a dirty sock. He found it and said, "Sock!" I said, "ya, eew, its a dirty sock." And he said, "Wash." I love my smart little guy.

Julia is so loud while playing by herself. The problem is that she is always playing with "Julia" or "baby" and "Mommy," and her little baby (horse, dog, doll, whatever....) and I keep hearing her say, "Mommy, Mommy!" and think she is talking to me. Mostly I'm pretty good at ignoring her though.
Julia has added a new name to her list that she regularly uses for toys..."Elimy."

Happy Halloween!

Well, we have some catchin up to do, so we'll put all our halloweening in one post, although it actually happened throughout the month.

PUMPKIN PATCH

Emily took us to a pumpkin patch at a nearby nursery. It turned out to be a lot of fun (well, not really the pumpkins, but they had a lot of other things to do). They had lots to play in, some farm animals to look at, some inflatable toys and we even skipped the corn maze and the light room.

Listen carefully and you can hear him. Chickens say "bok bok bok" and the ducks say "duck duck duck" :)

PUMPKIN PAINTING

This year we decided opted to paint, rather than carve our pumpkins. The kids are (a little bit) safer with paint than they are with knives.

Aspiring Photographer

So, we have a cool camera. (Lest anyone think that Em or I have any photographic talent... We'll show you how point-and-click the camera is.) Julia discovered which button takes the pictures and she was off.

Enjoy an artistic tour of an afternoon from the view of a toddler.

PICTURE TAG!

here's the deal...you open your picture files...choose the fourth file and then the fourth picture in the file and post it and tell us about it! (I'm so glad this was a cute one, I was worried it might be a dorky one of me!)

This is Julia in April 2007 with her cousin Sara. I was so excited for Crystal to have a baby girl so I could buy them matching dresses! Julia loves having a girl cousin. Its cute the way children bond with other children of the same gender. Gary is the same way with Liam, or wait,, maybe its just that other children are cuter than your own sibling. Anyway, I'm excited to see them grow up together. Maybe its time for a new matching outfit!
I tag everyone who reads this that has their own blog. Ha! Ha! I'm lazy and I got you all!

My darling little dears...

Julia and Liam have been so especially cute and sweet lately. Here's what they've been up to-

Liam likes to say, "o.k." which sounds a little more like "o-tay." We were shopping a few days ago and Liam kept standing up in his seat - not to be a pill, but I think because he liked saying, "o.k." each time I asked him to sit down.

Liam is a great little copy-cat. He is especially always copying Julia. One of Julia's things is to put her finger on her chin and go, "hmmm... I know! I know! I know!" Liam will copy her and say, "I know! I know! I know!"
He'll also copy you if you hum.

Both my little ones love to dance. Especially like Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty. Julia sings, "I know you," or "so this is true.." (It should be "so this is love," but Julia confuses it because of "true love." Liam also sings these songs, oh, and he'll also sing like Ariel if he hears Julia sing it first.

If you ask, "who wants (fill in the blank)" Liam will raise his hands in the air and say, "meeeee!"

Its also really cute when he says, " 'scuse me."

Anything with any kind of a trigger (including spray bottles or hairspray) is a gun for Liam. he says, "peeewwww, peeewww!" then expects you to stick out your tongue and die.

One night while rocking both my babies getting ready to put them to bed Julia said, "I'm a baby." I wasn't sure I heard her, so I said, "What sweetie?" and Liam (who was nursing) popped his little head up and said, "baby." In the same rocking session Liam pointed to Julia's nose and said, "nose." Julia looked at him so sweetly and said very lovingly, "yes, nose. You are so smart." It makes me so happy that they mostly get along and love each other.

Liam is a very happy boy these days, and likes to tell me so. Every once in a while he'll look up at me from whatever he is doing - playing with toys, reading, or even nursing, and he'll say and sign, "happy" with a huge joyful grin.

Julia hates Liam's nap time almost as much as her own and is so excited when he wakes up. (Sometimes she gets a little too excited and wakes him up early.) She always tells me, "no he doesn't want a nap, he's awake!" I know she really loves having someone to play with.

Yesterday I was actually the last one awake so Daddy helped Julia and Liam onto the bed and they sang to me, "I am a child of God" to help me wake up.

While going for a walk Julia said, "We're almost there!" I was thinking we were almost to the horses the kids like to go see, but when grandpa asked, "almost where?" Julia replied, "Almost to the church to wash the windows!" (A saturday activity we do with the kids as part of Mark's calling.)

Mark takes night classes and doesn't get home until 7:30 on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Last night Keira came in around 5:00 and Julia ran to the gate so excited to see her daddy, then saw keira and her face dropped. She hung her head and walked away soooo sad.

The kids like to march. Liam will pick up any long stick-like thing and bounce it around as he marches and says, "March, march, march!"

Walking to the church last week Julia decided she and I needed to jump over all the seams. So we jumped over every seam in the side-walk almost the whole way to the church. Liam had been in the stroller the way there, but didn't want to ride it on the way home. He wanted to "JUMP" too. Now he's always jumping instead of walking on the sidewalk.

Luck - or something like it... (An Incredible Story)

I'm going to try to tell the shortened version of an incredible story that still makes me laugh when I think about it. Honestly, I still can't believe all of this happened within a week and a half. Talk about "luck."
A few Sundays ago we were driving down the canyon in our Honda (talking about how much we love it and what a great blessing it has been...) with our two little ones sleeping in the back when we turned a corner in the dark and HIT a deer. It was a HUGE deer with a huge THUNK and then it flew over the car. It happened so fast we didn't even have time to think about reacting. Huge bummer, the cost of the damage was more than we thought we could bare, so we are attempting to put the car back together ourselves a little bit at a time. (Broken windshield, crumpled hood, broken fender bumper and headlight and turn light.) ...
With one car out of commission we felt extremely blessed that we still had another car, and so thankful that nobody was hurt.
The next weekend we decided to go to St. George for the long holiday. We were dissappointed we had to take our less gas friendly jeep, but thought we deserved a break anyway. A break we got. As we pulled into town we heard a squeal in our car. AAARrrrgggg. Luckily we made it to Mark's parents house, where many mechanical minded family members helped us discover the problem. It was another expensive problem, one that would be impossible to drive back home, and considering it was a holiday weekend, we couldn't get it fixed in St. George either. But, we were blessed to have available to us a Suburban and a trailer to tow the jeep home on. Yay.
Now this next part is partially our fault : We miscalculated the gas gage and missed an important gas exit. The suburban sputtered to a halt. It was dark it was cold and Mark had to walk to a gas station to get gas for the suburban. (too bad we didn't have a hose or something to siphon the gas out of the jeep!) But, the children slept, and luckily the gas station wasn't too far. Within an hour we were back on the road.
So, finally we got home, with two broken cars (not enough money to fix them) and Mark was starting school. But, we had the suburban (for a day before it got sold.) Traveling from home to work to school to work was at times a bit of a challenge. Tuesday morning (the day we got home from St. George at 3 a.m.) I had a doctors appointment, which I borrowed my sister's car to get to. I am not kidding you, I got about a mile away from my house before somebody rear-ended me! I couldn't even believe it. I am still amazed. I felt awful for the poor boy who hit me. Even though technically it was his fault, I totally felt like the jinx that made it happen. Luckily his insurance has been compliant and that car will soon be fixed.
Wheww..... That has been our car trouble story.
With all of this going on I have felt humbled to recognize all of our many blessings. Nobody was ever hurt, we've always had help, and I even got a new job that is working out really well that doesn't take me away from my little children, which I am so thankful for. How can I really complain? I suppose that's why I continue to laugh about it. Some would say we've had a string of bad luck. Maybe. Or maybe, its all in how you look at it. Good luck, bad luck, call it what you will, I still believe we are super blessed by our Heavenly Father who loves us so much.
But please don't ask me for a ride.

More journaling about my kids.

This morning as we were reading scriptures together as a family Julia insisted that she wanted to read. We've helped her read before, but this time she didn't want any help. She took the scriptures and began telling a story about Flounder and Ariel, and beautiful girls swimming in the water. Belle was eating ice cream. Princess Julia and Liam were in the story too. It was wonderful. It was about time for Mark to go to work so I told Julia she needed to finish the story so we could say a prayer and she said, "no, not a story. Its scriptures." We let her read her "scriptures" for a while longer. It was so fun. And she even recognized a few letters in the book title! So far she's got S and O down and I think G too. I ought to sit down with her with some flash cards and see how many she actually knows. We haven't really tried to teach her the alphabet, its just what she has learned from ABC books and wonderful television. (Yes, I let my children watch television. And I do not feel guilty about it, because they have learned some really neat things from certain good shows. I recommend: Word World, Super Why, Barney, and Signing Time).

Another fun thing is listening to her prayers. Sometimes they are really long, and other times really short. One night she will pray for EVERYBODY in the family (mom, dad, liam, and every aunt and uncle and grandma and grandpa and cousin she has) and the next night she'll just pick a few. The best is listening to her prayers on a shopping day. Last night she was thankful for milk and juice and foods - things that we had bought that day.

I love listening to Julia play from another room. She is a non-stop talker and it is funny to hear what she says sometimes. Lately she's been saying, "little help! little help please. I need a little help here." I don't know where she got that, but I love to hear it!
Less cute is when I hear her telling someone to go to Time Out in her angry voice.

Liam is super cute when he says, "un-uh" and shakes his head no when he really means Yes. Gets confusing though.

There is a book that Liam loves called "Mom Mine" and it goes through a bunch of animal moms and their babies. Each page has two words that describe the animals. "Mom walk, Mom slide, Mom play, Mom hide," etc... He loves "Mom hide" and he hides his face in the book. When we get to the Kangaroo page it says, "Mom hop" and he says, "hop hop hop hop" and bounces on my lap. The last two pages have a human mom and then her hugging her baby and it says, "Mom mine loves me!" He always kisses the mom on each page. I think that may be my favorite book too!
It's fun having number two because of the things we recognize #1 is teaching him. Things like, pens and pencils are called "paper." Julia has always confused them, and now Liam is calling pens or pencils or crayons, etc. "paper" too. Perhaps this is why they haven't figured out not to color on the walls, fridge, cupboards, toys, etc... Its because I always say, "no! only color on paper!" That just confuses them because they are only coloring (with) "paper!"

I know a lot of Liam's imaginative play comes from watching Julia. He likes to play with dolls and he is so gentle and loving with them. Its too cute to watch him cuddle a doll and pat her back and rock her.

Another funny thing is that Julia finds little tiny balls all around (from airsoft guns) and she calls them "baby balls." She gets all sweet with them and holds them and talks to them like they are babies. Yesterday I watched Liam find one and he got the cute little high-pitched voice that Julia gets and I'm sure he said, "baby ball" as he reached for it.

Julia likes to push chairs up to the counter to get things. Funny, it took her a long time to figure that out. Liam does it now too and finds hidden things that I don't see - Like a pixie stick under a shelf or crumbs of old foods - gross. It is really cute though, when they are both on one chair poking around for things that I mean to keep out of reach.

It is so much fun to watch them play together, and it makes me glad that I had them so close. I'm sure they will grow up to be great friends.
